Choosing an Electrician

Questions to Ask Before Hiring an Electrician

1. Are They Licensed?

To work in most states as an Electrical Contractor you must be state licensed. A city license may also be required depending on where the work is to take place. You can verify a contractor's credentials by calling or visiting your state licensing board's website. Hiring an unlicensed contractor means you accept responsibility for any damage.

2. Do They Have a Good Reputation?

The best way to check this is to ask for references. Get leads from trade organizations, local suppliers, friends or neighbors. A contractor with a good reputation will be glad to provide references and possibly even have customer testimonials for you to review.

3. Do They Carry Liability Insurance?

To adequately protect your property, all contractors should carry a minimum of one million dollars in liability insurance.

4. Do They Pull Permits?

Only licensed electricians can obtain necessary permits. By law, they are responsible for the work and for fixing any problems the building inspector finds.

5. Do They Protect the Customer?

Our technicians go through a stringent background check and carry a picture I.D. When we finish a job we leave it clean and free of hazards. Ask about our 100% guarantee and any product warranties.

6. Do They Have Guaranteed Pricing?

With an upfront price, you are guaranteed an exact price for the job no matter how long it takes an electrician to complete the work. For longer jobs, ask for a payment schedule in writing. A detailed contract protects both you and the contractor.

7. Do They Offer Service Contracts?

A good service contract includes a safety check of your entire electrical system and discounted prices for any electrical work performed during the life of your contract.

Hiring the right electrician can make a big difference in the price and quality of your job. Before you hire any electrician, we suggest that you ask them the questions listed above.
